Ad Absurdum

Hugo Alfredo Hinojosa is an award-winning Mexican playwright, philosopher, and filmmaker with more than 20 plays of his own, in addition to collaborating on over fifty productions in Mexico and abroad. He was playwright in residence at the Royal Court Theatre. His theatrical work has received Mexico’s National Fine Arts Literature Award for Dramaturgy and the José Fuentes Mares National Literature Award. His debut feature film, Ad Absurdum, premiered internationally and received the Thames Prize for Best Feature at the London Director’s Independent Film Festival, Best Latin American Filmmaker at IndieFest, and Best Film at the Independent Hungarian Film Festival.

As for what motivated me, to be honest, making films was always my professional goal. Life initially led me to work, study, and learn the craft of theater, and to develop myself within that world. I studied philosophy because I needed to develop a critical way of thinking, but also because it allowed me to remain close to theater. Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre, for example, were both great philosophers and playwrights. I could not study filmmaking because of financial and family circumstances. But then I discovered playwriting, and that moved me to continue creating through dramatic literature. Writing opened the door to so many other worlds. It gave me a way to explore ideas, tell stories, and eventually find my way back to cinema.
