"Piggy Banks" is a documentary for Historical Memory. The short film's title alludes to the old clay piggy banks that hold the memory of the victims of the Franco regime. It also reflects how this poetic device serves as a tool against forgetting and collective ignorance. This is the first documentary directed by journalist Juan Miguel Baquero, along with filmmaker Jesús Sotomayor. Filmed in the mountains of Cádiz, it focuses on the repression of the coup d'état and sheds light on testimonies that connect these stories to the present. The documentary travels through the towns of the region, interviewing direct victims to portray key issues such as the pedagogy of terror against defenseless civilians, violence against women, archaeological interventions, and the search for the disappeared… and how all the crimes against humanity have been buried in Spain under a blanket of silence that families are now unearthing against all odds.
